Birmingham Jazz have announced a radical new festival.
Coming up next month is Crossing the Jazz Boundaries, a two-day festival of dance and music challenging the jazz stereotype, bringing new and exhilarating sounds in two fantastic venues. Steel Pans, classical Indian instruments, flamenco and tango – all will be on display. The first three gigs feature a workshop, the Tango premieres a new commissioned work and the whole festival will be captured by impressionistic artist Gina Southgate.

The session starts with a talk about the music, background and instruments. A chance to hear how the songs and melodies are constructed and improvised by the world’s top players, demonstrating rhythms and patterns in Indian ragas and Carnatic Song. A gig by this outstanding musical quartet will follow.

A double bill of Flamenco workshop skills and music. The workshop with Demi Garcia Sabat & Lourdes Fernandez will demonstrate rhythms and techniques unique to Flamenco. Trio Nova present an eclectic take on the Flamenco, Latin and Jazz repertoire.

The Almagro Ensemble are a UK-based tango ensemble with the most versatile and in-demand musicians from the tango, jazz and classical worlds. They present some of the new innovations in tango from Argentina, with a commission to compose new music inspired by their diverse influences.
