New Birmingham-Romania air route launches

Second city link for airport.

Romania’s largest hybrid carrier, Blue Air, has launched three times weekly flights from Birmingham to Cluj-Napoca, the second largest city in Romania.

The route launch follows in quick succession from the airline’s announcement of its new route between Birmingham and Larnaca starting in March 2017 and its inaugural Bucharest launch which was celebrated in March this year.

Served by a 189 seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the carrier flies to the city of Cluj-Napoca on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday starting from Friday 16th December.

Cluj-Napoca is Romania’s second-largest city and is brimming with Bohemian cafes, music festivals and vigorous nightlife. The city is full of architectural masterpieces and is home to Romania’s second-largest Gothic church as well as many baroque buildings and medieval towers. Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “Blue Air has had a very successful few months at Birmingham Airport flying thousands of passengers to and from the Romanian capital city of Bucharest. We are delighted that they are already introducing this second route to Cluj-Napoca. The Romanian city will be a popular city break destination for our passengers as it is a cultural and historic centre home to universities, great nightlife and landmarks dating to Saxon and Hungarian rule. We look forward to seeing the carrier continue to go from strength to strength here at Birmingham Airport.”

Tudor Constantinescu, Chief Commercial Officer at Blue Air, said: “It is indeed a proud moment for us at Blue Air to enhance our presence at Birmingham with the addition of thrice-weekly flights to and from the heart of Transylvania – Cluj-Napoca, adding to the existing Bucharest operation. We are also gearing up to introduce even more flights to Birmingham by adding another service from our Larnaca base starting in March 2017.

“The West Midlands is an important market for us and building our position at the airport demonstrates an ongoing commitment to Birmingham as a valuable part of the Blue Air family. One of the key opportunities at this airport is the mixture of leisure and business passengers allowing a strong volume of traffic all year round. Romania has excellent trade links with the UK and so we are confident the route will be a success.”
