New design graduates to transform Birmingham Cathedral.
In:Site Festival returns to Birmingham city centre for a fifth year this September and sees a new group of recent graduates transforming the outdoor space around the cathedral with an ambitious programme of craft ‘interventions’ inspired by the Cathedral’s tercentenary celebrations.
In:Site, a festival of graduate creativity, organised by Birmingham based arts organisation Craftspace, returns to Cathedral Square on the 7th-11th September. A grant from the local John Feeney Charitable Trust has meant that a series of temporary commissioned artworks will be created in the cathedral grounds.
Craftspace Director, Deirdre Figueiredo said: “The location of the Cathedral and its heritage provides an opportunity for new graduates to develop their skills by making site-specific work for the public to engage in.”
Over the week, each graduate has a day to make their creative intervention on-site, turning the making process into a performance. The public will be able to contribute to the making of some of the artworks, which will incorporate art forms such as casting metal, ceramics, weaving and wood turning. This year, the festival has become part of the Cathedral’s tercentenary celebrations as many for the artworks will be inspired by the history and heritage of the cathedral and the stories associated with the way in which the area has changed in that time.
This year, later in September, In:Site returns at Birmingham Weekender, a weekend of free outdoor performances, art and activities across the city centre. Working in partnership with Ikon Gallery new graduates in illustration and textiles will be stitching artworks based on drawings inspired by the general public. This free drop-in event takes place on the 26th and 27th September.
The project is supported by The John Feeney Charitable Trust, Colmore Business District, Birmingham Cathedral and 6/8 Kafe.
