Antiques Roadshow meets Cash in the Attic with the launch of luxury day trips to learn from TV experts how to spot a cut-price collector’s item.
The huge popularity of antiques-related television programmes has led to the setting up of the Antiques Day Trip, which offers excursions to The Swan at Tetsworth in Oxfordshire, owned by renowned auctioneer Tom Keane of Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic fame.
Tom or fellow TV antiques experts Eric Knowles, from Antiques Roadshow, and Paul Hayes, from Cash in the Attic, Bargain Hunt and new BBC series Car Booty, will be on hand to share their wealth of knowledge with treasure hunters. As well as giving a talk about their work, they will also pass on advice about how to spot fake from fortune.
The visitors will then be able to put their new-found knowledge to the test by identifying and valuing a selection of items displayed around the building. After that, they will sit down to a sumptuous two-course lunch at The Swan’s French restaurant.
Voted Britain’s finest antiques centre, The Swan is a former Elizabethan coaching inn in the pretty village of Tetsworth near Thame, where Queen Victoria once stayed. It now boasts 40 showrooms packed with a dazzling array of furniture, silver, glassware, fine art, jewellery, china and other collectibles and curios.
Antiques Day Trips, which are organised by London-based firm Wilson Picks, run twice a month, on Tuesdays, between April and September. The next trip will be on May 19. The £99 cost of the excursions includes include transport to and from Oxfordshire in a luxury coach and the two-course lunch.
As well as individual bookings, Wilson Picks can also arrange bespoke group trips and specialist talks. Group trips are available for a minimum of 12 and the 13th person goes free with pick-up points arranged to suit the groups.
