French horn symphony showcase.
On Wednesday 11th March, the Philharmonia Orchestra presents a concert celebrating the glorious sound of the French Horn at Warwick Arts Centre. From the expressive sounds of Strauss to the horn calls in Brahms’s Second Symphony, this concert showcases the French Horn and a full size symphony orchestra at its best.
Tonight’s concert is also a great opportunity to hear one of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s hugely talented Principals, Co-Principal Horn Katy Woolley, take centre stage to perform Strauss’s ravishing Second Horn Concerto. Katy, who was appointed Co-Principal Horn at just 22 years old (having previously been appointed 3rd horn while just a student!) has forged a formidable career so far and is already a Professor of Horn at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Brahms’s First Symphony took over 15 years to write, so it is a pleasant surprise for all that his Second Symphony was completed over just one summer in 1877. The idyllic mood of Brahms’s Second Symphony, heralded by Horn calls, invites comparison with Beethoven’s own Pastoral Sixth Symphony. This symphony is also known for one of Brahms’s most recognisable tunes, his Lullaby, which appears in the first movement.
