Andy Munro on Blues midweek draw in Sheffield.
A Tuesday at Wednesday was never going to be easy, especially on a gloomy January day, doubly especially following a sparkling cup fixture.
Certainly Gary Rowett must have had his work cut out to motivate the players after their unlucky Albion reverse. Wednesday are a typically uncompromising and physical Championship side which made his work doubly difficult.
A couple of changes might have helped refresh things but the side was basically the same as ever and it’s a credit to Blues that they displayed the right level of physicality to carve out another point, making it two draws in White Rose country – a creditable return and something unlikely to have been achieved under the previous fragile regime.
One big concern was the injury to key defender Morrison, who has basically transformed singlehandedly a previously vulnerable Blues defence. While Mr Versatility, Jonathan Spector, filled in more than adequately on the day, a vertically challenged central partnership of Robbo and Spector is not a recipe for confidence.
Apparently, Rowett is in the market for a replacement for Messrs Hall and Edgar but it seems strange that when both have looked fairly competent in their positions, neither were kept on, all the more so if they had lined up with Morrison.
If the transfer window bangs shut with Demi Gray still in the room then, in an attacking sense, Blues appear to be heading in the right direction. However, there is a pressing need in central defence and some class/physical presence as cover for the centre of midfield. In fairness, both needs are acknowledged by the manager. Maybe it’s also time to bring in another youngster to the matchday squad such as promising prospects Charlee Adams and Reece Brown.
