TV star set for Midlands cycle event

Life on Mars star Dean Andrews will be jumping in the saddle to raise money for a national children’s charity next month.

Andrews will be joining hundreds of cyclists as they take on the Wiggle in Mercia, a 62 mile cycling sportive around some of the Midlands most scenic locations in aid of children’s charity Caudwell Children. The Rotherham born actor has been a partner of the charity for the past year, helping them fundraise to provide practical and emotional support to families living with disabled children.

A keen sportsman, he will be joining hundreds of cyclists as they take on the popular sportive event which takes in the scenic countryside surrounding Wolverhampton and neighbouring counties. The actor, also known for his role as Robbie in the BBC’s Last Tango in Halifax, is a cycling enthusiast and is relishing the challenge of taking on the ride: “Cycling plays a huge part in my life, I love taking my bike out and experiencing the thrill of riding. Being able to do this in support of an amazing charity like Caudwell Children is a fantastic opportunity.

“The charity work hard to do amazing things for families in real need, so it’s a pleasure to work with them and do what I can to help them help young people in need.”

The Wiggle in Mercia is part of a series of events throughout the UK run by cycling sportive providers Kilo to Go in association with leading online retailer Wiggle.

Kilo to Go have selected Caudwell Children as their charity of the year and believe attracting celebrities such as Dean Andrews will be a great benefit in raising money for the charity. Their director Simon Thomson, said: “The Wiggle Motion in Mercia is a key date on the cycling calendar and a truly unique ride. The route takes in some of England’s most breathtaking scenery including Cannock Chase, the Severn Valley and Iron Bridge.

“Having an actor like Dean Andrews riding really helps raise the profile of the event and Caudwell Children. As our charity partners we are doing all we can to help them raise money for families in need and having DS Ray Carling in the saddle can only be a positive.”

The Wiggle Motion in Mercia takes place on Sunday 30th March. The sportive starts and finishes at Aldersley Leisure Village, Aldersley Road, Wolverhampton.
