A city centre gallery has announced two major exhibitions for late 2013.
Acclaimed artists David Tremlett and Tom Johnson will have their work exhibited at Birmingham’s Ikon fallery this winter.
The Luminous Ground is the first European survey of work by Australian Tim Johnson. Including early photographs from the 1970s and paintings with which he rose to dominance in the 1980s, the exhibition leads in particular with his recent paintings, including an extraordinary combination of influences and references, populated by Buddhist deities, Vietnamese farmers and Christian angels, floating in a space filled with Papunya dots and circles.
Cornish-born David Tremlett, meanwhile, makes a vast new work for Ikon – 3 Drawing Rooms – transforming the second floor of their Brindleyplace galleries with pigment applied directly to the walls. Each of the three rooms will have a contrasting composition of geometric shapes, retuning our perception of the space.
Both exhibitions open on 4th December 2013.
