Birmingham Jazz presents

Highly-respected trio to play Jewellery Quarter date.

Birmingham Jazz will be holding another night of quality music this Friday, 21st June, at the 1,000 Trades bar in the Jewellery Quarter.

Saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and pianist Nikki Iles are iconic figures on the UK jazz scene composing and playing in their own distinctive contemporary styles. It is a shared love of the Standard Jazz Repertoire that brought them together for their last album, Stardust. Last year they went into the studio again and, in a collaboration with US-based Dave Holland, created the album Lush Life, which was released in September.

Despite a long-standing musical friendship and frequent collaborations, it has been almost twenty years since Stan and Nikki recorded their first album Treasure Trove together. Their next offering, Stardust, celebrated a shared love of songs, as well as featuring an original composition from each was released in 2015.

For this gig they are joined by Dave Green whose first public performances in the late 1950s were with his childhood friend, Charlie Watts. He regularly backed visiting US stars at Ronnie Scott’s, including Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Roland Kirk and Sonny Rollins, and has been part of the Scott Hamilton Quartet for the last fifteen years, also working with Alan Barnes, Henry Lowther, Gareth Williams and his own trio. It’s easy to see why he has become one of the most respected bass players in the world.

Nikki Iles, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Green, Friday 21st June. 1,000 Trades, 16 Frederick Street, Birmingham B1 3HE.

Admission: Advance standard £12.50, members £10, students £3. On the door: £15/£12.50/£5.
