Old Rep invites audiences down the rabbit hole

Relaxed performance of Christmas play scheduled.

The Old Rep is encouraging all audiences to join them on a magical adventure down the rabbit hole this Christmas with a Relaxed Performance on Wednesday 27 December, 1.30pm and a British Sign Language Interpreted performance on Thursday 28 December, at 1.30pm.

Alice in Wonderland runs from 20 November until 30 December 2017 and is the third Christmas production produced by Birmingham Ormiston Academy. This is the first time The Old Rep have offered a Relaxed Performance for their Christmas production giving families and adults with access or special needs, in particular people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, learning disability or sensory and communication disorder the chance to enjoy the show.

This brand new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale follows Alice on her journey through the enchanted and extraordinary Wonderland, meeting many peculiar characters along the way. From intriguing white rabbits, bizarre riddles, mad tea parties and dangerous encounters with the Queen of Hearts, will Alice ever find her way home?

Alice in Wonderland will be packed with songs, dance and lots of family fun for audiences aged from 4–11 years and their grown-ups. For the Relaxed Performance the auditorium won’t be as dark and the sound will be quieter, it’s ok for audiences to move about and make noise if they need to and The Old Rep team will prepare a quiet chill out space should audience members need to take a break from the show. Ahead of their visit, audience members will receive information with pictures of the venue, the stage and cast outlining anything in the production that could scare, surprise or upset them.

Gaynor Cheshire, Principal BOA said: “This is the first time we have offered a Relaxed Performance and I am personally delighted that we will genuinely be able to invite all audiences whatever their needs to join us for Alice and experience our wonderful theatre. I hope this first Relaxed Performance will also be a learning experience for our whole team so we can identify how we can ensure the most accessible and welcoming experience for all our audiences in future.”

In addition to the Relaxed Performance on Wednesday 2th7 December at 1.30pm a British Sign Language Interpreted performance will take place on Thursday 28th December, 1.30pm.
