Unsung heroes set for Birmingham Comedy Festival

It’s about a lot more than the headliners.

There’s always more going on at Birmingham Comedy Festival than just the big name acts. So while the likes of Matt Lucas, Greg Davies, Henning Wehn, Joe Lycett, Simon Amstell, Phill Jupitus and Robin Ince, may grab the headlines, we’ve delved a bit deeper to pull-out a a selection of other must-see shows.

EG Birmingham Comedy Festival Breaking Talent Award 2017

The official launch event for the festival sees five superb up-and-coming especially selected hand-picked acts from across the West Mids slug it out for the prestigious title. Catch the next generation of comedy stars today. Sponsored by Edinburgh Gin, so expect some fine gin-based cocktails alongside the laughs.

2x Free Half-Dayers

A total of 16 great one-hour shows across consecutive Sundays in two city centre venues. It’s like a mini-festival in itself, with pun-masters and one-liner merchants, observational comics, character acts, sketches, and improv’. Highlights include a revival of classic BBC comedy series Around The Horne and an appearance from Josh Pugh who, since winning the festival’s Breaking Talent Award in 2015, has been crowned English Comedian Of The Year and toured Australia! All shows are free-in too! See as many shows as you like and zip back’n’forth between venues. Doors open 1pm.

Before Manhattan, Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters and other now iconic movies, Woody Allen was a writer and stand-up comedian. Revisit his classic 1960s stand-up routines in a vivid recreation by Simon Schatzberger.

Maisie Adam: Living On The Edge

The Yorkshire lass attempts to ‘adult’ in the big wide world. Maisie won the prestigious So you Think You’re Funny? award at Edinburgh this summer – only the third female comic to do so in the award’s thirty year history!

George Egg: DIY Chef

Desperate for a decent meal while stuck in a succession of budget hotels, George discovered he could rustle up a good meal using just what was available, including a trouser press and hairdryer. Now, the ‘anarchist cook’ turns his attention to the garden shed with a succession of power tools, gardening equipment and office supplies at his disposal. Taste his results at the end of the show! A cookery/ food show with a difference.
