A thought for today

Gordon Harley on the subject of change.

I have been thinking that change is like having a rucksack on your back, full of all things you have experienced.

At any time the sack is full, in order to take on something new you need to let go of something from the past. This is when change becomes a problem. Letting go of stuff can be hard – it can feel safer to hold onto the past than to take on new things.

To grow as a person we need to take on new things, not simply carry a bigger rucksack. I feel that we need to be okay with the idea that as we try new things they may not always work out perfectly first time. Everything is capable of being sorted. I have to admit that I subscribe to Shakespeare’s view  – that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. I would apply that to life.
