This Week at the Robin 2

New acts, old acts and some in between.

Tonight The Robin  sees the latest in the Sam Draisey sessions, featuring open mic acoustic performers. Admissions’s free and taking part is open to all.

On Wednesday there’s the return to the Robin of prog folk band Stackridge, who appeared at the first Glastonbury festival at the same time as they were finishing above Wings and Genesis in the Melody Maker’s Brightest Hope poll. Forty-plus years later they’re still playing live and currently warming up for the summer’s festival circuit.

One of the country’s most highly-regarded rock and soul bands perform on Thursday. Stone Foundation have released four albums with another due this year and have gained a reputation for a blistering live act that has seen them playing with the Specials, amongst others. Talking of which, support comes from Roddy Radiation’s Skabilly Rebels.

On Friday another regular appears in the form of From the Jam, now featuring Bruce Foxton as well as long-time singer Russell Hastings and Big Country drummer Mark Brzezicki. Apart from revisiting the back catalogue of his old band, Foxton recently recorded a new album Back in the Room, which featured contributions from Paul Weller and Steve Cropper. Except to hear versions of some of the greatest songs ever written.

Saturday has tribute band Bon Giovi performing.

One of the country’s great unsung guitar heroes performs on Sunday. Ken Nicol first came to prominence with the Albion Band, who never achieved the acclaim they deserved, before spending eight years with Steeleye Span. He has recorded solo albums as well as regularly playing live, drawing on a repertoire which includes folk, jazz, ragtime and more.

Ken is also doing a lunchtime guitar workshop concentrating on acoustic finger picking – tickets are £5.
