Courtney Pine at Birmingham’s The Drum

The award winning multi-instrumentalist Courtney Pine makes a rare appearance at Birmingham’s The Drum on Saturday 27 April 2013.

A major figure on the British jazz scene for over 25 years, the highly influential Pine as led a generation of innovative players who’ve broadened their styles to take jazz out to a wider audience.

For his critically acclaimed 15th album, House Of Legends, Pine has gathered together musicians from Africa, the Caribbean and Europe. Together they tell tales of life from a truly multi-cultural viewpoint though an exhilarating and highly danceable mix of jazz, merengue, ska, mento and calypso.

Since his debut album, Journey To The Urge Within, back in 1986, Courtney has racked up a long list of awards including several MOBOs and a British Jazz Award 2012. He’s also been honoured with both an OBE and CBE. Though rooted in jazz, his music has always pushed boundaries and defied simple categorisation, calling on such influences as African, Indian and European traditions, hip-hop and drum’n’bass, as well as the rich sounds of the Caribbean.

House Of Legends acknowledges that specific influence, with Jazzwise declaring it their Album Of The Year 2012.
