Belgrade Theatre brings poetry to life on stage

The Belgrade Theatre will team up with Midland Creative Projects and Bloodaxe Books to stage live poetry show Being Human, which will play in the B2 auditorium from 22 to 23 June.

Being Human is a live literature show based on poems from the collection of contemporary world poetry in Being Human, the third book in Bloodaxe’s acclaimed trilogy after Staying Alive and Being Alive.

Performing poems based on themes such as love, loss, fear and longing, the production will see music, projections and imagery combine to bring the poems to life on stage.

The West Midlands-based cast includes Ben Hastings, Elinor Middleton and former Belgrade Youth Theatre participant Barrett Robertson, who will return to his home city of Coventry to perform at the Belgrade. He is no stranger to the stage, having performed in the UK tour of Porridge, as well as in the lead role of Tobias in Other at The Drum and in Gangsta Rapture at mac Birmingham. Barrett also had a part in Coventry writer Geoff Thompson’s feature film, Clubbed.

Designed by Coventry-based theatre company Talking Birds, with whom the Belgrade recently co-produced the smash hit FA Cup drama We Love You City, the show will be directed by Interplay Theatre’s Artistic Director Steve Byrne.

Being Human is the latest show following national tours of the first two books in the Bloodaxe poetry trilogy, Staying Alive (2003) and Being Alive (2006/2007). Founded in 1978, Bloodaxe has won numerous major literary awards, including four Nobel Prizes and is widely regarded as having revolutionised poetry publishing in Britain. Staying Alive has now sold over 120,000 copies in Britain and over 40,000 in America to date.

Tickets for Being Human are available now from the box office on 024 7655 3055 or via www.belgrade.co.uk priced at £12.25, with children’s tickets and concessions available.

Cheaper tickets can be purchased from the Belgrade’s website.
