What to do with Christmas trees

Throughout January, Veolia Environmental Services (Birmingham City Council’s waste contractors) are encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas tree by taking them to one of the 5 Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) across the city. The trees are either chipped to make paths in parks and gardens or shredded for composting.

Epiphany or twelfth night is the traditional time to take down the decorations. Many people believe that that leaving your decorations up past the twelfth night brings bad luck.

Christmas trees, along with any other green garden waste, can be recycled at the HRCs throughout the year. However, until 31st January, for every tonne of Christmas trees and green waste received at the HRCs, Veolia is donating £1 to the Royal British Legion the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Anita Ward’s chosen charity.

Kevin Parker (Regional Veolia Environmental Services) Regional Communication Manager says ‘The Royal British Legion is an excellent charity and we hope to raise as much money as possible for our veterans and their families. I ask all residents to recycle their tree to help make a real difference.’
