The Birmingham Press

This Week at the Robin

There’s a definite classic rock tinge to the venue.

Wednesday sees the return of Robin favourites Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. We mentioned them last week but forgot to add another quote that sums them up – “America’s best bar band.” There’s never a guarantee that a gig will be a good one, but the Dukes are as safe a bet as you can have. Tickets £20.

There’s a prog double header on Thursday. It Bites are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their landmark album Big Lad and the Windmill, and also previewing their new release Map of the Past, which is exclusively on sale at their live shows before release next month. Co-headliners are Mostly Autumn, one of the most highly-rated live attractions in the country, who will also be previewing material from their new album, due out next year. Tickets £20.

Friday sees Pink Floyd tribute Darkside at the Robin. Tickets £12.

There’s an interesting part-tribute on Saturday in the shape of Apart from Rod, featuring members of Mr Stewart’s backing band including guitarist Jim Cregan, who played with Rod for three decades, and Robin (son of John ) le Mesurier. Tickets £12.

On Sunday the Robin hosts the award-winning I O Earth, Classic Rock’s Best New/Unsigned Band of 2010. With an eponymous debut album out and a follow-up, Moments, due later this year, presumably they won’t be eligible to retain their crown. Tickets £8.

Coming up at the Robin over the next few weeks are former Mott the Hoople and Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs (8th), ex-Marillion singer Fish (14th) and the final tour of r’n’b veterans the Hamsters (18th).
