New development set for student area

Centrick secures high street space for new Chinese supermarket in Selly Oak.

A Chinese supermarket, complete with accommodation above, is set to open in the heart of Birmingham’s student village following a major deal secured by Centrick Commercial. A welcome addition to the vibrant Selly Oak high street, the unit will be the latest home for Taste Chinese Supermarket, secured with rent in excess of the £80,000 a year guide price.

The 3,850 sq. ft. site, situated at the junction of Bristol Road South and Harrow Road in Selly Oak, has been let to business owner Jiang Young Feng. Having already established a number of similar developments in Leeds, this will be Mr Feng’s first investment in Birmingham.

Alongside the Taste Chinese Supermarket, the ground-floor of the development will also feature a café, with 70 studio apartments above. Perfectly situated within walking distance of Birmingham University, it also boasts easy transport links into the city centre, and has three supermarkets, restaurants, bars and takeaways right on its doorstep.

The deal marks an impressive win for newly-established Centrick Commercial, which builds on the expertise of property specialists Centrick. George Xydias, Commercial Director, explains: “This popular and vibrant area of Selly Oak is well established as the centre of the city’s student population, many who have travelled from all over the world to study at Birmingham University.

“Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of interest for this site; not only does it benefit from an impressive commercial space fronting Bristol Road South but it also comes with student accommodation already fitted-out with the highest quality finish. It will be yet another feather in the cap for the region and a great success story for the city.”

Taste Chinese Supermarket is expected to open its doors on December 2020.
