A new era for volunteering

Appeal goes out for community volunteers.

The evolution of volunteering at Witton Lodge Community Association has taken a step forward with the recruitment of a new Volunteer Co-ordinator.

Marie Benjamin’s appointment is a concerted push by the Association to provide local people with even more opportunities to make a positive contribution to their community.

Iram Fardus, Business Development & Performance Manager for Witton Lodge, said the value of having local people supporting and delivering provision in housing, employment and wellbeing cannot be underestimated. “Volunteering gives you the opportunity to try something new, to gain invaluable experience and develop new skills,” she said.

“It can also help improve your career prospects and build confidence. Research tells us that meeting new people through volunteering can really improve your own sense of wellbeing and lead to better health.”

The new era of volunteering at Witton Lodge Community Association kick-starts on Friday, February 28th, with the first of a new weekly project series – Tea and Talk; which will be led by volunteer Marie – who has been volunteering at Witton Lodge for a number of years.

“I know first-hand the benefits of volunteering,” she said. “It increases your self-confidence and provides a real sense of purpose. When you are helping others it’s very empowering and helps you feel a part of the community.

“The great thing about volunteering is it also provides you with a sense of achievement, knowing that you’re making a positive difference in people’s lives is wonderful.”

Tea and Talk will run from 2-4pm every Friday at Perry Common Community Hall. It is an open, free event where anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer and wants to know more about what’s involved can meet and chat with Marie and some of the Witton Lodge volunteers over a cuppa.

“Being a volunteer can be an exhilarating experience,” adds Marie. “Getting involved in new projects, learning new skills and helping your local community at the same time; what better way to spend your free time.”
