Environmental message to be performed at city gardens

Picnic and a play to show the effects of sea pollution.

This May half-term, The Makeshift Ensemble theatre company will bring its touring production of I am Turtle to community garden, Martineau Gardens, on Thursday 30th May, 12noon. The open-air show tells the Turtle’s life story through puppetry, music and live theatre with a strong message about what can be done to keep the sea plastic free.

Within the beautiful, leafy grounds of Martineau Gardens, the audience will discover the ancient song of the Sea Turtles, based on Turtle’s Song by Alan Brown, as they journey from hatchling into adulthood, though shipwrecks and sea shells. Makeshift Ensemble will bring the story to life, performing from the Gardens’ shipwreck play deck.

Gill Milburn, Director of Martineau Gardens said: “We’re delighted to welcome The Makeshift Ensemble for this afternoon theatre – reducing our plastic consumption is a theme close to our hearts at Martineau Gardens, which is an oasis for wildlife.”

Visitors are welcome to bring picnics, blankets and folding chairs. The Gardens, though only two miles from Birmingham city centre are a green oasis that is teeming with wildlife. After the show, there’s plenty to enjoy. Families can get close to nature, explore the beautiful community garden, with woodland, gardens, vegetable beds, a bird hide, the Stick Man trail and more.
