A free, fun day of learning and celebrating bees. Organised by Birmingham Friends of the Earth, this is a chance to learn more about bee diversity and their life cycles from two bee experts who will be giving advice about how to help bees in the garden and local community. You’ll be able to explore the gardens, identify bee-friendly plants, see the bees and hives in action and taste some honey (weather permitting). Children can get creative at a craft workshop and have fun playing games. Picnics welcome. Martineau Gardens, 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7UG.

The Birmingham Honey Show, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September, Martineau Gardens, 10am – 4pm

The Birmingham Honey Show returns to Martineau Gardens for 2012. This is just one of the national Heritage Open Days event. The Honey Show is a chance to find out all about the fascinating craft of beekeeping, you’ll be able to talk to local beekeepers, view observation hives, make candles from beeswax and buy locally produced honey direct from the beekeepers. There will be plant sales and refreshments available. There’s woodland, an orchard, formal gardens, ponds, a hot house, an earth oven, wildflower meadow, a visitor room (located in a 1940s pavilion) and more. Find out what a community garden is and Martineau Gardens’ role in providing a home for wildlife so close to Birmingham city centre.

Bee Keeping Course, Sat 18 August, Martineau Gardens, 10am – 5pm, £60

Explore a Secret Garden, Martineau Gardens, Mon to Sat 10am – 4pm

A wildlife oasis awaits you at this beautiful, organically maintained community garden. The Gardens include an orchard, herb beds, vegetable plot, children’s ‘shipwreck’ play area, a formal garden, woodland, ponds and a bird hide. There are home-grown plants and seasonal produce (including jam) for sale. Drinks available or bring a picnic.

Open throughout the year Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm (closed Bank holidays including Mon 27 August), free entry.
