Shootout at the OK Corral

Andy Munro watches Blues beat Wrexham in the Hollywood derby.

There was a lot riding on this match, with not only American pride on the line but also three valuable top of the table points.

It was a brilliant atmosphere in front of a sell-out crowd and in typical Blues fashion we went one-nil down after a couple of minutes following a goalmouth melee caused by an ineffective attempt to punch out by Bailey Peacock-Farrell. Incidentally, whilst he was very effective from thereon, the goalkeeping Grim Reaper in the form of Ryan Allsopp is surely waiting in the wings.

However, Blues fought back with Jay Stansfield (who else?) slotting home from close in. Urged on by a vociferous crowd, Blues took complete control of the second period and following a sublime cross from the excellent Alex Cochrane, Jay was ‘Johnny on the Spot’ with a carefully guided header.

Even better, the impressive Paik Seung-ho then slotted the ball through to Tomoki Iwata, who hammered the ball home. The latter, incidentally, put in an excellent all-action performance, not unlike Meikel Kleftenbeld used to, but with the added bonus of quality on the ball.

The back four were generally excellent, with Taylor Gardner-Hickman quietly going about his business, while Christoph Klarer and Krystian Bilik were excellent, although the latter will be missing from the next game due to a needless sending off.

Further upfield, Willim Willumsson was a continual threat as a sort of midfield will o’ the wisp as he pulled the opposition around with his non-stop movement and perhaps the only disappointment was Emil Hansson, who got into some good positions but then spoilt it all by some woeful delivery.

On the plus side, Lyndon Dykes came on to impose his physique and showed he can be a different but very effective option up front.

Certainly, many reasons to be cheerful.
