Magical lantern parade at Midlands Arts Centre

Autin Dance Theatre presents Light Up Fest.

Get ready to brighten up your winter evening as Autin Dance Theatre takes you on a magically evocative journey through Cannon Hill Park to welcome the arrival of the festive season.

Specially commissioned by Midlands Arts Centre, the inaugural family-friendly procession on Saturday 30 November will feature beautifully made willow and paper lanterns illuminating the sky, led by a glorious array of performers, musicians and a community cast.

The parade will start at MAC’s Outdoor Theatre with free refreshments and continue through Cannon Hill Park, one of the city’s best-loved green spaces – everyone is welcome. Dress up warm!

Leading up to the event, MAC will host 3 months of free lantern-making and storytelling workshops delivered by local community artists, along with students and families from local schools.

Get ready to brighten up the winter evening as we set off on MAC’s first magical lantern procession – transforming Cannon Hill Park into a glowing wonderland. Willow and paper lanterns will illuminate the sky, led by a glorious array of performers, musicians and community cast. Everyone is welcome.

Johnny Autin, Artistic Director of Autin Dance Theatre, says: “We’ve always wanted to put on a live outdoor event including communities and professionals, so I am thrilled that we can work with Midlands Arts Centre – MAC on this wonderful winter participatory lantern procession, especially engaging local community groups and to be making some beautiful lantern creations together. This fits the company’s ethos of community, inclusivity and accessibility and we can’t wait to show you all what we will be making in the next few months.”

Jo Carr, Performing Arts Producer at MAC, says: “We are delighted to be partnering up with associate artist Johnny Autin and Autin Dance Theatre again for MAC’s inaugural Light Up Fest. We hope that lots of families and children will seize the chance to get hands-on and creative at free workshops that will culminate in bringing local communities together to light up the winter sky.”

Workshops are free but booking is essential. You can sign up here.

The free special lantern-making and storytelling workshops at MAC will be delivered by trusted community artists, including Shelley Eva Haden, Oliver Davis and Tori Drew.
