Digitally creating at Moseley Road Baths

Moseley Road Baths inspiring the next generation of Young Curators.

Moseley Road Baths are working with six early-career creatives, Young Curators, to make an exciting new digital creation inspired by Moseley Road Baths. The Young Curators programme is part of Moseley Road Baths Diving In Project and is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Over the course of the paid six-month programme, the Young Curators will choose an audience, conceptualise an idea, engage with the space and its community, explore the digital, commission artists, and ultimately, curate a final product. This could be a film, podcast, video game, digital immersive experience.

Sadim Garvey, Moseley Road Baths said: “Our aim is to work with young people to create something exciting and innovative in connection with the baths. We are keen to support local young people to develop their careers in the creative arts sector as well as to use digital technologies to tell stories that engage the Balsall Heath community. We can’t wait to see what they create.”

The six young curators are: Sadie: South-London Bred, Birmingham-Based and a General Do-er of Bits n Bobs, particularly in the realms of music, broadcasting and Silly Art. Malikah: Currently a speech and language therapy student, Malikah enjoys sports and love scenery areas. Amira: Just finished college, Amira looks forward to doing something other than studying! Nicole: Works for a charity supporting Refugees in Birmingham, Nicole loves languages, painting and meeting new people. Habib: Birmingham-based Arabic teacher and service designer. I love languages, training at the gym and drawing. Jessica: A Birmingham based neurodiverse and queer practitioner focusing mainly on performance and event design and photography.

To collaborate with the young people, Gaby Songui, a creative producer, is working alongside them and Moseley Road Baths to help deliver the Young Curators programme.

Gaby is a Birmingham-based freelance arts facilitator, writer, producer and storyteller, she commented: “I am excited to work with a talented group of young people! I don’t usually get the opportunity to work with a paid group of participants, and commissioning work always improves the quality of the final project. I can’t wait to see what they create as I take them through the process from idea generation to launch. My main aim is to engage with the talent in the community in a way that truly platforms and empowers them.”
