Andy Munro enjoys Blues’ 2-1 win at home to Luton.
Yet again Blues played with undreamed-of style and panache against the Hatters, and the only problem is that those who have yet to see the new soap powder brilliant blue Blues just don’t believe my tales of football derring do down at Stans.
Luton are certainly no mugs and backed by an impressive and vociferous away following, you can see why they’ve scored plenty as well as conceding fairly frequently. However, Blues should have been out of sight by halftime with Messrs Crowley, Bellingham and Villablanca footballing will o’ the wisps. A combination of great goalkeeping and some dubious offside flagging kept the opposition in the game.
In fact, in the second half Blues were nearly made to pay when a slip let in the Luton sub to equalise although this should have been academic if the Juke hadn’t uncharacteristically missed a chance of Ronnie Rosenthal proportions.
At that stage, if I was over-critical, I think Blues should have made their three subs earlier. Davis, Maghoma and Gininez were probably the right changes but it would have been better if they’d been made a bit earlier.
However, Blues still had enough in the tank for Juke to make amends for his earlier miss when he outmuscled the Luton defence to net the winner. It’s worth saying at this juncture that in the second half, the much maligned Lee Camp pulled off one wonder save as he did against Blackburn so maybe people will now get off his back and highlight the good things about his performance instead of the negatives.
During the game, in fairness, the Luton attackers were quite a handful for even a resolute Blues defence. Izzy Brown caught the eye and if he was playing for Blues instead of Luton, I would put decent money on us at least reaching the play offs. Notwithstanding that, what a pleasure it is to go down the Blues and be entertained so royally on the pitch.
