Nice!

Blues end the season with a nil-nil draw at Reading. Andy Munro reports.

If the match against the Biscuitmen could be described by a biscuit then ‘Nice’ might be the variety to pick.

Never really exciting, it was played in a fairly sedate manner with both sides seeming happy to share the spoils. Despite a couple of excellent saves by Camp, if anybody deserved to shade it then it was probably the Blues but nobody would argue with each side getting a point apiece. In fact for most Bluenoses, the final game was an anti-climax so maybe the points deduction did us a favour in keeping our season alive after that awful run of five straight defeats ended any hopes we might have had of the play-offs.

Garry Monk freshened things up a bit with Craig Gardner a surprise captain and Vassell getting a start alongside Adams. Young Charlie Lakin also got a start and did himself no harm with a decent performance.

It was also worth noting that last week’s new and nervy defensive central partnership played with a lot more aplomb and perhaps too many Bluenoses (myself sometimes included) make too many rash judgements. Vassell incidentally showed he’s still retained his power and pace with a couple of excellent runs when he was unlucky not to score.

We’ve ended up in a solid lower middle of the table position instead of a solid upper mid-table position so there’s not much difference in the final analysis other than getting the EFL monkey off our back.

Roll on next season!
