Improve your English during summer holidays

College offers ‘passport’ to summer learners.

South & City College Birmingham is offering a unique opportunity for those looking to break into the workforce.

The college will be running a three-week ESOL course (English Speaking for Other Languages) for beginners upwards from Monday 2nd July to Friday 20th July 2018. Those who enrol on the course will be given a ‘golden ticket’ to further their development in September.

By enrolling in the summer course, students will secure a place on a full time City & Guilds ESOL course at the college in September, which provides a grounding in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Pauline Harrison, Head of ESOL at South & City College Birmingham, explains: “The course offers an excellent starting point for those looking to move forward into the workforce, whether they’ve been at home with children and wish to return to work or have been out of work for other reasons.

“The course teaches the essential English language skills required for employment and is hugely popular, so much so that there are often waiting lists for several months at colleges across the country.

“We are delighted to be able to provide new students with the chance to skip the queues by enrolling on our ESOL Summer School.”

Many students who have previously attended an ESOL Summer School at the college have gone on to achieve a City & Guilds ESOL qualification which has opened doors for employment opportunities.

Pauline added: “Anna Alina completed Summer School with us last summer and progressed to Level 1 ESOL in September. She made significant progress, especially in her grammar and writing skills and went on to pass all of her exams. She is now involved in volunteering at the College’s Fusion Centre as the lead librarian – a role that has enabled her to develop her confidence in using some employability skills whilst improving her English. Next year Anna will be progressing to Level 2 ESOL.”

The Summer School will run across four campuses – Soho Road in Handsworth, Fordrough Lane in Bordesley Green, Fusion Centre on Bradford Street in Digbeth and the Golden Hillock Women’s Centre in Small Heath.
