Allen’s key

There’s more city jazz on Friday night.

Birmingham Jazz welcome another top quality talent to the city on Friday night 29th September when Brandon Allen performs at the 1,000 Trades in the Jewellery Quarter.

Brandon’s exciting jazz quartet project will be playing the music of saxophonist Gene Ammons. Ammons was one of the founders of the Chicago style of tenor playing but was often in the shadow of his tenor-playing contemporaries, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, and Sonny Stitt. Despite this he forged a lasting partnership with Stitt, recording some classic tenor battles in the 1950s. he project focuses on music spanning Gene Ammons’ entire career, from the late 40’s right through to the mid 70’s.

Brandon is currently touring throughout Europe, USA and Asia with the Kyle Eastwood Band, regularly hosting the Late Late Show at Ronnie Scotts, leading his quartets and Sextet and working as a sideman with various artists/bands. The quartet has played together for several years; the Gene Ammons project has been very well received at concerts throughout the UK and Australia. The band has recently recorded an album, now in its final stages before its release.
