Andy Munro witnesses Blues’ defeat to Reading.
I’m starting to feel a bit Zola about our recent results and the current system of 3-5-2 stirs up some unfortunate memories.
In fairness, there wasn’t much in a tight first half, although Sam Gallagher had to plough a lone furrow up front, ‘supported’ by Maghoma who was trying to play keep ball instead of passing. The midfield was, at best, pedestrian with N’Doye the main culprit – a couple of yards too slow, losing more balls in the air than he should given his stature, but worst of all was his inept control and passing. Gleeson and Kleftenbeld offered little and before he dislocated his shoulder, Jenkinson must have thought that it was a waste of time passing to them.
In defence, even new signing Roberts looks a concern as good though he is in the air, he’s far too casual on the ground and perhaps the only bright spot was the performance of Bramall who was lively throughout.
During the second period, we were all at sea particularly for Reading’s opener and, until we went to 4-4-2 we never threatened up front with Jutkiewicz and Gallagher (who in fairness looked promising) never getting any service. Harry must be fuming but one wonders what Kevin Bond is bringing to the table in coaching terms.
Trying to bed in six or seven players isn’t easy and it seems to me that playing a 4-4-2 system for now is the best option and means that players know specifically what they have to do and can’t pass on responsibility. Unless we get a new midfielder (or even if) we should be playing Gardner and Davies above Gleeson and Kleftenbeld. At least the former two can play with passion. Also, in Gardner’s case, he also brings to the table some quality set pieces which we sadly lack with the apparent demise of David Cotterill.
For the moment, I’m keeping the faith but it’s difficult at times although when everybody is fit, choosing two from three of Gallagher, Vassell and Adams is an enticing prospect, if nothing else.
