Kings Heath – home of the indies

String of new businesses open in city suburb.

Kings Heath Business Improvement District has welcomed a host of exciting new independents to the area over the last month, just in time for the busy Christmas period.

Amongst the latest additions to the thriving Birmingham suburb is stylish traditional barbershop, Black Market Barber Company at 12 York Road, coffee, beer and bicycle eatery, Gorilla Coffee Café at 1 Drayton Road, and Australian style health café, Madcup, located on the bustling High Street at 20 Alcester Road South.

Also set to open before Christmas is Brian’s Juice and Bites, a fresh smoothie bar launching this weekend, and Madflost, a modern furniture and art specialists due to open on 17th December, both located on the cobbled street of Kings Court.

The new businesses will join the area’s much-loved established indies such as People Shop, honest skincare, Togademus Toys, and Polar Bear Records, to name a few.

These latest openings come at the end of an exciting year for Kings Heath, which has seen several successful new independents launch over the last 12 months, including Black Lab, Mela Rossa, Spectacle Emporium, and Love 2 Lounge, reinforcing it’s reputation as ‘home of the indies’ in the region.

Kevan Carr, Black Market Barber Company, said: “Kings Heath is a fantastic location – York Road is such a vibrant place full of independent businesses and we’re really excited to be a part of that.”

Renowned across Birmingham for boasting a huge variety of small businesses, boutique shops, and family run cafes and bars dotted along the High Street and tucked away down side roads, it’s growing number of independent businesses has undeniably boosted the attraction of the up and coming suburb.

Kings Heath BID Manager, Martin Mullaney, explains: “Here in Kings Heath, we pride ourselves on the many independent eateries and shops that call Kings Heath home. It’s been a very exciting year for us at the BID, as we’ve welcomed some fantastic new additions to the area which have proved to be hugely popular, and we’re sure that these new additions will only add to the unique and varied offering for residents and visitors alike. Whether you’re shopping for Christmas gifts or are out for festive celebrations, Kings Heath is the perfect place to visit this season.”
