Literary location for award-winning venue.
Tucked away in the pretty North Wessex Downs village of Blewbury, south Oxfordshire, The Red Lion Pub & Kitchen re-opened in March 2016, after a major refurbishment by new head chef/proprietor, Phil Wild and wife, Arden.
Tucked away at the end of a quaint, tree-lined lane edged with ancient, half-timbered, thatched cottages, The Red Lion Pub & Kitchen occupies a gorgeous and characterful 17th century red brick building. Upstairs three comfortable guest bedrooms, and downstairs, drinking and dining space, for fifty. Shoukld you feel a bit more adventurous as autumn turns to winter, further outdoor seating is available in the pub’s attractive orchard garden.
Phil’s inspired, seasonally-changing menu of modern British cuisine with a few pub classics, proudly showcases locally sourced produce, including game from the local Well Barn Estate, meat, fruit and veg from local suppliers and fresh fish delivered daily from the award winning Flying Fish Company in Cornwall. The excellence of the menu has already won wide acclaim and seen the Red Lion awarded a Certificate of Excellence for food and service from Trip Advisor within four months of opening.
Located at the foot of the Berkshire Downs near Didcot in the Vale of the White Horse, Blewbury is easily reached via the M40 and A34 and the pub would make an ideal base for a pre-Christmas break, lying close to two long-distance walks, the Ridgeway and the Icknield Way and within easy reach of the Bicester Outlet Shopping Village
Blewbury is known for its literary and artistic connections. Kenneth Grahame (Wind In The Willows) was a regular at The Red Lion. Barbara Euphan Todd (Worzel Gummidge) and the ex-jockey and thriller writer, Dick Francis also lived here, while Agatha Christie lived in the nearby village of Cholsey.
