Summer is a blockbuster at Brindleyplace

Film festival helps draw record crowds.

Brindleyplace has welcomed over a million visitors already this summer, thanks to a series of show-stopping events, including the ever-popular Film Festival.

Chosen by the public, this year’s Film Festival – which took place between 12th and 21st July – showcased nine Best of British films for free in Central Square, including Mary Poppins, Labyrinth and Spectre, with visitor levels reaching over 100,000 over the course of the event.

Now in its sixth year, the Brindleyplace Film Festival has grown significantly over the past two years, with footfall increasing by more than 5% from 2015.

Alex Perrins, Marketing Executive at Brindleyplace, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Film Festival grow year on year and attract more and more people from across the city. We had a great line-up of British films and despite some typically British weather at the start, every film gathered a crowd.

“After receiving the most votes overall, it was no surprise that Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was our most popular film with almost 1,000 fans out in force to watch the mega blockbuster. Thanks to our sponsors, Lamborghini Birmingham, Bentley Birmingham and Infiniti Birmingham, visitors also had the chance to get up close and personal with a bright green Lamborghini Huracan, a Bentley Bentayga and two Infiniti Q30s in between selected films.”

A total of 1.12 million visitors were recorded between May and July this year, with the monthly local produce markets and the 17th annual Dragonboat Race helping to attract people to the estate.

Earlier this month, in addition to the Film Festival, Brindleyplace screened the Wimbledon finals and also hosted a number of Birmingham & Solihull Jazz & Blues Festival performances, showcasing the seminal film Jazz on a Summer’s Day on the big screen, boosting footfall even further.

Brindleyplace is now counting down to Birmingham Chilli Festival on Saturday 17 September which proved to be the most popular event in 2015.
