CBSO announce memorial concert

Tribute to conductor Walter Weller planned.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has announced that Assistant Conductor Alpesh Chauhan is to take the helm for a concert of music by Felix Mendelssohn, Dvorák and Bruch at Symphony Hall on Thursday, June 8th. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of Walter Weller who passed away last June and who was originally due to conduct the performance. Chauhan has previously cited Weller as one of his inspirations.

The performance will include Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, two pieces by Dvorák – Othello and Romance – and Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy. Former CBSO leader Laurence Jackson, now leader of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, returns as a soloist for a special appearance with his former colleagues in both Romance and Scottish Fantasy.

Before that, Chauhan can be seen at Symphony Hall next Wednesday, March 9th (7:30pm) conducting the CBSO in a programme of works including Shostakovich’s Fifteenth Symphony, Borodin’s Polovtsian Dance and the UK premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul.
