Andy Munro on a five star Blues performance.
The day before the Fulham match, my daughter e mailed me a picture of an hallucinogenic mushroom found growing in her garden at her place in France. Maybe it was a sort of virtual process of osmosis but I was certain that I must have been on some sort of substance as the Blues match at Fulham unfolded.
With Cotterill out and no wins in three, any sort of result against the Cottagers was going to be a bonus especially as they have been responsible for so much Bluenose misery. In fact on Facebook, somebody was bemoaning the fact that Fulham had made their dad cry when we lost an FA Cup semi-final replay many moons ago. In my case you can triple that as I was also present for significant Premier League defeats that effectively sent us down – the last one being the game when Zamora revealed the donkey side hidden in Roger Johnson.
Gary Rowett rewarded Davies’ last two energetic performances with a starting place and likewise the enigmatic Toral. Gleeson opened the scoring with a screamer and then Caddis buried a spotkick in his usual clinical fashion. Soon afterwards, Toral popped up in the opposition area to become Johnny on the spot and put Blues completely in control. A goal from Fulham failed to dampen the party atmosphere amongst Blues tremendous away support and Donaldson made the game safe to end an undeserved barren patch.
Even a late goal from the multi million pound McCormack was cancelled out by a great solo effort from the lightning quick Soloman Otabor. This was an excellent performance but it was noticeable that Fulham had 60% of the play and almost as many goal attempts.
Yet such stats are completely academic given Blues’ stalwart defending and clinical finishing. Meanwhile Middlesborough were hammered three=nil by Hull which put our result at the KC Stadium in a slightly better light and with Derby losing, we are both still sixth and back in the pack of ‘real’ contenders. Time to dream again, without the need for any mind bending substances methinks.
As a footnote, to the impatient Rowett trolls lambasting him on social media after two defeats on the bounce….who needs a plan B when you’ve got such an effective Plan A?
