New centre in Yardley launches with free taster activities.
A new community centre will open in November for the people of Yardley. Mercurial Arts with Oasis will launch the Hobmoor Community Centre with a week of free taster activity sessions. Focusing on art, craft and wellbeing, the sessions will provide a starting point for a consultation exploring what the local community would like from their new hub.
The centre, located on Wash Lane, is part of Oasis Hub Hobmoor which includes Oasis Academy Hobmoor primary school. With several bookable rooms, it will be available for activities and classes every weekday evening during term time from 5pm-10pm.
The Hobmoor Community Centre Launch Week will take place from Monday 2nd-Friday 6th November 2015, every evening from 5pm-10pm. The series of free taster sessions which will not only support the needs of the local people, but also support Birmingham-based workshop leaders who will deliver a range of activities that are fun, educational, artistic and will include bhangra dancing, dhol drumming and batik.
Funding for this pilot project and consultation comes from Birmingham City Council’s ‘Culture on Your Doorstep’ scheme supporting new creative enterprises in the city. Mercurial Arts, a Coventry-based digital-dance company have worked with Oasis Academy Hobmoor over the last three years and are championing the space, having previously used it for workshops, talks and performances as part of projects with the pupils.
Mercurial Arts’ Artistic Director Oliver Scott said: “We are delighted to be helping Oasis Hub Hobmoor launch the centre and find out the sort of community activity the people of Yardley would like in the future. We hope the hub will provide a space that is engaging and enriching for all local people, where everyone in the community is welcome.”
