Morrisons Great Birmingham Run help for Stroke Association

Woman running to say thanks for supporting husband.

A 29 year old has signed up for the Great Birmingham Run to raise money for The Stroke Association as a thank you for the support they provided when her husband suffered a stroke last year.

Olwen Sharp, a police officer from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, had been married to Paul Sharp, 47, only three months when he unexpectedly suffered a stroke in July 2014. The stroke caused loss of feeling in the left side of Paul’s body as well as difficulties with speech. He stayed in hospital for a month and was in a wheelchair for another month following his discharge from hospital.

The Stroke Association visited Paul in hospital and provided valuable support and advice to the couple. Olwen explained: “It’s a cause close to my heart and I was really keen to give something back as the help they provided was really valuable during what was a really traumatic time.

“We’d been married barely three months and our worlds were turned upside down. I think the work The Stroke Association is extremely important and I want to support them.”

She hopes to raise in excess of £250.00 and to set a record time of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Olwen added: “I go for regular runs with my dogs Reggie, Rose and Frankie, probably around 4 times a week. This is also an excellent time to get focused and work hard to beat a personal goal!”
