First Steps programme launched by Birmingham Royal Ballet

Premiere of production aimed at young families.

This October, for the first time ever, Birmingham Royal Ballet will present a production specially designed for families and young children in its home city of Birmingham.

First Steps: A Child’s Swan Lake is a brand-new hour-long adaptation of the classic ballet Swan Lake for children aged 3–7 years old, designed as the perfect introduction to ballet for children. A storyteller sets the scene and introduces the young audience to the characters involved in the ballet and the large orchestra who provide the legendary music and bring the beautiful tale to life. This is followed by a magical performance featuring a full company of dancers and orchestra, a flurry of white tutus and a sprinkling of romance!

This interactive production is part of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s commitment to bringing the world of ballet and live performance to audiences of all ages, with all tickets priced at just £10.

Birmingham Royal Ballet Assistant Director, Marion Tait said “Sometimes the full length productions of great classical ballets such as Swan Lake are just a bit too long and overwhelming for very young children. First Steps is the perfect opportunity for families to experience, in the space of one hour, all the thrill and spectacle of live theatre, including our full orchestra, with the story clearly explained and even a chance to stand up and join in!”

Ahead of the performance, audiences are encouraged to visit www.brb.org.uk/firststeps to download games, colouring sheets and more all explained by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s mascots, George and Victoria (the Lion and the Unicorn).
