Local student to climb Kilimanjaro for charity

Meningitis research to benefit from expedition.

Local student Emily Cooper from Sutton Coldfield has set herself the ultimate challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in September to raise money for Meningitis Research Foundation.

Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, Africa, is the tallest free standing mountain in the world and stands at 5,895m. Kibo, the snow-capped peak, is one of the most recognisable sights in the world of adventure and it is a huge challenge for those who are prepared to tackle the landscape and the altitude to reach the summit. Emily is hoping to raise £2,990 for Meningitis Research Foundation by completing the six day trek. The trek is run by Choose a Challenge, who create tailor-made adventures for students.

Emily who is currently studying Psychology at Plymouth said: “Meningitis Research Foundation is a worthy cause because any money donated to the charity goes towards aiding those affected by meningitis or septicaemia, helping their families, and also funding research.

“Meningitis is prevalent in babies and students, which is why it is such an important cause to support. Meningitis Research Foundation also supports clinics in Malawi, in the South-East Africa, where the prevalence of meningitis is large, and a lot of the people there suffer from this devastating disease.

“By donating to this charity, you will help make the hope of getting rid of meningitis and septicaemia come true. Meningitis Research Foundation is a charity well worth donating to.”

Tom DeFraine, Events Fundraising Assistant at MRF, said “We are so grateful to Emily for agreeing to climb Kilimanjaro in aid of MRF. Meningitis and septicaemia are diseases that can leave a baby, child or adult fighting for their life within hours of the first symptoms. As well as having the adventure of a lifetime they will be raising much-needed funds and awareness of this devastating disease.”
