Two upcoming events aimed at historians.

The Victorian Society, Birmingham and West Midlands Group are holding two events aimed at anyone who wishes to learn more about this period of the region’s history.

Victorian and Edwardian Buildings explained: An exploration of the architectural styles important from 1830-1914 is a day school organised by the Society on Saturday 16th May. It takes place at the Birmingham and Midlands Institute, Margaret Street, Birmingham B3 3BU

This event is aimed at anyone interested in learning more about the key architectural styles of the Victorian age. No previous knowledge is expected. Starting with coffee at 10am the Day School will be chaired by Professor Hilary Grainger, Chair of the Victorian Society who will also be contributing a paper on the use of Terracotta and the so-called Queen Anne Style. Other speakers will look at the Arts and Crafts movement, the Classical style, the Gothic Revival and the predominant Edwardian Style.
The day will commence with an overview of the key architectural styles, given by Tom Ashley, Senior Victorian Society Caseworker. Other contributors are Alan Crawford, Ian Dungavell, Joe Holyoak and Anthony Peers. Wherever possible local Midland buildings will be used as examples of the styles discussed.

The cost is £36 (£20 for full time students) to include tea/ coffee at registration, buffet lunch and tea/coffee during the afternoon.

Before then, They made a difference: Some notable women associated with Birmingham before the First World War is a half-day school on Saturday 17th January at the same venue.

The morning will start with coffee and registration at 9.45 am with an introduction at 10.15 am by Professor Hilary Grainger, National Chair of the Victorian Society.
Speakers will include Brendan Flynn on Georgie Gaskin, Sally Hoban on Florence Camm, Fiona Joseph on Beatrice Cadbury and Nicola Gauld on the Birmingham suffragettes. The cost is £16/£10 full-time students, to include tea/ coffee at registration.
