On Thursday 5th February from 6.30pm there will be a free family-friendly event at Artrix featuring stalls, refreshments, face painting, balloon modelling and glitter tattoos. At 7.30pm the original 1988 film of Hairspray (PG) starring Ricki Lake, Divine and Debbie Harry will be screened. Tickets are free and available from Artrix Box Office on the night. This event has been made possible with the support of Bromsgrove District Council.

February 1st sees the National Theatre live (Encore) screening of DV8’s powerful production John, based on a touching true story of a troubled man and the challenges he faces. This show features adult themes and languages and is suitable for over 18s only.

On Sunday 8th February, fans of Oscar Wilde will be captivated by Wilde Without the Boy, a dramatization of ‘De Profundis’, Wilde’s letter to Lord Alfred Douglas from Reading Gaol. This moving production is directed by award-winning Gareth Armstrong and performed by Gerard Logan.

As well as public events, Artrix Learning and Engagement is working with North Bromsgrove High School to offer year 9 and 10 students a performance and workshops designed to address the very current issue of homophobic bullying in schools. Performed by Birmingham-based company Round Midnight, the show is called Straight Talking.

Artrix Learning and Engagement Co-Ordinator TC Peppercorn commented: “It’s vital that young people are made aware of issues around equality and that their comments to others can have a powerful effect. Bullying of youngsters who may be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender can have tragic consequences and it needs to stop. I am very pleased that North Bromsgrove High with the support of the Council and LGBT Unison are able to host this show and workshops.”

Other events and displays to mark LGBT History Month will be happening across the Bromsgrove and Redditch Districts in libraries and public spaces. More details on the council website www.bromsgrove.gov.uk
