Brindleyplace celebrates twenty years of great memories

Competition marks development’s anniversary.

Brindleyplace will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year and, to mark the occasion, the canal-side development is on the hunt for peoples’ best memories and stories from Brindleyplace over the past two decades.

Recognised as one of the most influential city centre regeneration projects in Birmingham, Brindleyplace remains a firm favourite amongst both the local business community and the general public, with more than four million visitors each year and over 10,000 employees working on the mixed-use estate.

To celebrate the last twenty years, Brindleyplace is now calling on those who have lived, worked, played or stayed there to submit their favourite memories of Brindleyplace, from engagements, to getting their dream job, meeting their best friend or taking part in one of the many community events.

To encourage people to share their memories, Brindleyplace will be giving away its biggest prize to date to whoever has the best story. Made up of twenty individual rewards, the overall prize will showcase the many great experiences on offer at the development, including feeding the turtles and a family ticket for the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham, an overnight stay at both Hilton Garden Inn and SACO serviced apartments, £50 to spend at Ethos, a cocktail class for six at All Bar One, spa day and treatments for two at Bannatynes and four tickets for a performance of the winner’s choice at the Crescent Theatre, as well as free food and drink from a selection of the restaurants, cafés and bars at Brindleyplace.

Alison McKenna, Senior Marketing Executive at Brindleyplace, said: “We’ve seen millions of people visit Brindleyplace and each one has their own story to tell. We know some of these stories, such as two dogs getting married, the first ever winner of our Dragonboat race and breaking a Guinness World Record but there are also many, many more that we don’t know about and we’d love to hear as many of these stories as possible.”

Formerly a site of factories at the height of Birmingham’s industrial past, the site now occupied by Brindleyplace lay derelict for many years following the decline of Britain’s manufacturing industry. In July 1992, planning was granted for a new business and leisure destination on the site and, in 1995, the first phase of Brindleyplace was opened to the public.

Alison said: “Brindleyplace continues to thrive as both a business and leisure destination. In fact, this Christmas we recorded a record number of people visiting Brindleyplace, increasing by 11 per cent from last year.

“In the past 12 months alone we have seen Deutsche Bank move into its new offices at Five Brindleyplace, bringing 2,000 additional employees to Brindleyplace, as well as the most successful Dragonboat race (Birmingham’s largest charity event), refurbishments at All Bar One, the opening of new bar and restaurant Le Monde and the launch of our popular barber, The Gentleman. It really is incredible to think just how much Brindleyplace has transformed an area that once lay derelict and unused.”

To enter the competition and submit a memory of Brindleyplace, people need to email their story to alison.mckenna@brindleyplace.com by the 27 February 2015. Alternatively people can get in touch on Twitter, via @Brindleyplace using #BpMoments, or via Facebook.
