City college elects school council to provide voice

Students to play key role in decision making.

Abbey College Birmingham has elected a team of talented and dedicated students to sit on its Student Council, playing a key role in the college’s future decision-making.

Five students from the leading city-centre independent college made it through rigorous rounds of elections and presentations, before being chosen by their peers to sit on the council.

Each member of the Student Council acts as a representative that the college’s students can approach. The hard-working council are often working on several projects at once, and regularly meet to discuss college-wide initiatives, including student events, electing the charity of the year, and organising fundraising drives.

This year, the council has chosen to renew its links with Acorns Children’s Hospice, a network of care for life limited and life threatened children and young people, and their families. Money raised from events and donations will go towards supporting the charity. The generous group recently supported Macmillan with a highly successful coffee morning, which saw £272 raised for the cancer support charity.

Among the enterprising group is Megan Wileman (18) from Tamworth, who is currently in Year 13, studying English Language, Biology, Maths at A Level. Megan commented: “I’m thrilled to have been chosen by my peers to sit on the Student Council, as it is something I have aspired to since joining the college. I believe I can help make a difference to the students here, and not only by helping to organise events, but by lending an ear to those who are in need, and providing a voice for the student body as a whole.

“I’m very proud to be part of such a great team, which has a strong working relationship with the staff, so our opinions on important issues are valued and taken into account.”

Abbey College Birmingham Principal Stephen Robinson added: “I am delighted to welcome the new members of the Student Council, which represents all aspects of student life. The opinions of our students are highly valued here at Abbey College Birmingham, and so it is imperative that they have a body to represent their viewpoints.

“The role carries a lot of responsibility and dedication, but it also provides an opportunity for an individual to exercise leadership and to give back to the wider community.”
