What’s On at Artrix

Stage, screen and live music coming up.

Founded three years ago by Worcester-based baritone Jamie Knight, Wooden Horse are beginning to build a profile. Accompanied by Ben Church on slide guitar, harmonica and vocals, the duo honed their set into a tight and exuberant blues sound. Now they’ve been joined by pianist Stuart Mcilroy, who has supported Carl Perkins and Bill Lee Riley and the result is a boogie style band that’s guaranteed to get you up and moving.

Their new album This Kind of Trouble is an intoxicating blend of country blues, bluegrass and folk. Close your eyes while listening to it a nd you’re transported to a warm summer’s evening in Mississippi. An experience not to be missed.

Wooden Horse are playing the Artrix Studio on Saturday 21st June. Tickets cost £8.00

In a timely reminder of the First World War centenary, Blackadder, Baldrick, Melchett, Darling and of course the hapless George are getting to ride again in a new theatrical version of the Blackadder Goes Forth series.

All and Sundry’s production, which is running at Artrix from 24th to 26th June, will bring three episodes to the stage:

Corporal Punishment
Despite problems with communications, orders for another mission arrive and Blackadder breaches regulations by eating the messenger. With George as his lawyer in a court martial, and with only one night to live, can the Flanders pigeon murderer avoid death by firing squad using Baldrick’s smuggled escape kit?

Private Plane
Blackadder, Baldrick and George volunteer to join the Royal Flying Corps unaware that their nickname the ‘Twenty Minuters’ refers to their average life expectancy. After Blackadder and Baldrick crash their plane behind enemy lines, they are captured by the Germans (including a rather camp Baron von Richthofen) and must prepare for a fate worse than death.

Goodbyeee
Millions have died but the troops have advanced no further than “an asthmatic ant with some heavy shopping”. Now, at last, the ‘final’ big push looms, and Blackadder is willing to try anything to avoid it. Will putting a pair of underpants on his head and shoving two pencils up his nose get Blackadder invalided back to Blighty?

All and Sundry’s production of Blackadder Goes Forth is showing at Artrix from 24th to 28th June with a Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm. Tickets cost £14.00 (£12.00)

Movies to suit everyone are coming to the Artrix cinema this June. Tracks follows loner Robyn Davidson on her journey across the Australian outback with four camels and a black Labrador for company. In We Are the Best, hope triumphs adversity when a trio of Stockholm girls decide to form a punk band despite not having any instruments. Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan star as a divorced couple who reunite to plot a revenge robbery in The Love Punch.

On 30th June there will be a screening of the Young Film Ambassadors choice of film for June. This project, which is a joint venture with Arts Connect West Midlands, enables local young people to work alongside independent cinemas to help shape film experiences for children and young people.

Tickets cost £6.50 (£5.50) or £3 for accompanied children under 16. There are also accessible screenings for audiences with special needs and their carers.
