Coming up at Artrix

Comedy, music and things that defy description.

Audiences at Artrix on Friday 30th May can expect comedy mind-reading, animation, interaction and mind-blowing miracles.

Doug Segal is a comedian with a difference. The entertainer, who has been described as “a bit like a funny version of Derren Brown” has won several awards and his TV appearances include BBC One’s New Year’s Eve show. The audience of 9.5 million live viewers is a record for any performer of this type in the UK.

There’s lots of audience participation but nothing spooky and supernatural about this show. Everything is achieved using Doug’s skills from his background in advertising and psychology. Expect jaw-dropping entertainment and plenty of gasps.

Doug Segal presents I Can Make You a Mentalist at Artrix on Friday 30th May at 8.00 pm. Tickets (ages 16+) cost £15 (£12).

Jeff Leach is a true Renaissance man. Having already achieved success with careers in commercial radio, as a DJ and presenter for BBC and as a film actor, he is now focusing his plethora of talents on stand-up comedy. With three sold out Edinburgh Festival shows under his belt, he has now begun his UK tour.

Fresh from university, Jeff became one of Europe’s most notorious live DJs under the moniker Men In Masks producing for Island Records and Ministry of Sound and at a festival in 2008 he was offered the opportunity to become a television presenter.

This resulted in Jeff presenting a whole host of youth, music, factual entertainment and documentary programmes over the past four years including the National Lottery, Comic Relief’s Naughty Bits (BBC1) and Big Brother’s Big Mouth.

In his Work In Progress show, Jeff tackles the fragility of being a modern man, fears of fatherhood and the perils of pining for fame.

Jeff Leach presents Fit (Work in Progress)in the Artrix Studio at 7.30 pm on Saturday 31st May. Tickets cost £10 (£8).

Disraeli Gear and Are You Experienced are two of the greatest albums of all time. The million-selling creations of Cream and yhe Jimi Hendrix Experience achieved universal acclaim and spawned seminal singles such as Hey Joe, Sunshine Of Your Love, Purple Haze, Strange Brew and Fire.

With Voodoo Room, who are playing both albums live at Artrix on 6th June, you get the opportunity to see them reproduced live, with the same energy and virtuosity that was at the heart of Hendrix and Cream’s performances.

The band’s line-up consists of Pete Orr on guitar and vocals, who has been thrilling audiences in the UK and Europe for decades, legendary UK session drummer John Tonks, who has played with the likes of Duran Duran and top bass man Andy Tolman.

Voodoo Room present Hendrix & Cream at Artrix on Friday 6th June at 8.00 pm. Tickets cost £14 (£12).

Improvisation comedy can be a bit of a hit and miss affair but the five young men who call themselves Noise Next Door have got it sewn up.

The quintet (Charlie, Sam, Tom, Matt and other Tom) glide onto the stage with confident energy and romp through stand-up, comedy games and improv songs, leaving everyone in stitches.

They are particularly good at involving the audience, making sure that they are partly responsible for the story behind every game, song and adventure acted out. Described by the Guardian as “staggeringly well-executed” this is a rare treat for comedy fans.

The Noise Next Door are playing at Artrix on Thursday 5th June at 8.00 pm. Tickets (16+) cost £12.

All Artrix tickets are available from the box office on 01527 577330 or www.artrix.co.uk
