The Birmingham Secular Fellowship is a new non-religious community group which started in Moseley in October 2013.
It brings people together for ‘church-like’ gatherings on Sunday mornings. The organisers would like what they call a good range of Brummies to come along, make friends and form a community that is “there for one another.”
The meetings don’t include any religious teachings or practises, but instead there are short talks, singing and spaces for personal reflection.
The organisers said, “Our aim is to create an inspiring and uplifting atmosphere through talking and singing about what is good in the world, what is amazing in the universe and how we can be better people.”
Topics for the morning are diverse and have so far included astronomy, food, music and charity.
The fellowship is open to everybody and children are welcome. Meetings are once a month on a Sunday, at the Birmingham Buddhist Centre in Park Rd, Moseley. They start at 11am with the formal part lasting about an hour, followed by tea, cake and a chance to chat. Entry is free.
The next meetings will be on the following dates:
Sunday March 2nd: Guest speaker Dr James Bendle, University of Birmingham – “Back to the Future – The Antarctic in a Warmer World”
Sunday April 6th: Guest speaker Dr Richard Butler, University of Birmingham – “Mass Extinctions and Dinosaurs”
Sunday May 4th: Guest speaker tbc
Sunday June 1st: Guest speaker Ian Pittaway – “Why Teach Philosophy?”
