Take the challenge to fight meningitis

The  charity Meningitis Now is looking for dedicated outdoors enthusiasts to join an exhilarating challenge to conquer eight Lake District peaks in just two days.

The English 3000s – Trek the Lake District Challenge takes on the eight peaks that rise above 3,000 feet, including the highest mountain in England – Scafell Pike at 3,209 feet.

The charity provides the accommodation, meals, transport between the peaks and the services of a qualified and experienced safety team for the event, leaving trekkers free to concentrate on walking, enjoying the breath-taking scenery and completing the challenge.

Events Officer at Meningitis Now, Becki Niewiadomski, said:  “We’d love you to join us and take part in this challenge – we’re looking for about 40 people to be in our team.

“Our friendly events team will be on hand to guide those joining us every step of the way, including providing fundraising ideas and fitness and training tips.

“Every penny you raise will make a real difference in our fight against meningitis – saving lives and rebuilding futures, through research, awareness and support.”

The challenge is open to individuals or groups from families or workplaces. It takes place between 4 and 7 September this year and registration, which is now open, costs just £75. Those taking part are asked to pledge a minimum of £500 in sponsorship.

The challenge will see trekkers climb Skiddaw (3,045ft), Helvellyn (3,117ft) and Helvellyn Lower Man (3,035ft) on day one, followed by Scafell (3,163ft, Symonds Knott (3,146ft), Scafell Pike (3,209ft), Broad Crag (3,064ft) and Ill Crag (3,068ft) on day two. The total distance covered will be around 21.7 miles and the total time spent walking about 21 hours.

“This is not a challenge for the faint-hearted” Becki added “and will push walkers to their limits. But by the end of the weekend you’ll think of your fellow walkers as your friends – after all, you’ll have completed a great achievement together.”
