Living in a box

Get ready for the first festival of the year.

The second Art Box Festival comes to Birmingham and Lichfield during the last two weekends of January 2014, running a series of events, exhibitions and workshops celebrating Upcycling and boxes.

Art Box kicks off its second festival on 17th January in Birmingham’s York’s Bakery, with an exhibition of Birmingham resident, photographer Castro’s work and celebration of the festivals opening. The Birmingham weekend includes exhibitions at The Old Joint Stock, a portrait booth in Brewdog on Sunday, events, exhibitions and interactive work at The Victoria and an installation and interactive work, with a meet the artist session at Le Truc.

For the second weekend (January 24th-26th) Art Box goes back to its roots and begins in the venue which not only saw the first festival but that saw the first exhibition, George IV, with music from Chris Elliott, Ellie Galvin and Rob Taylor alongside images to give you a taste of the festival. The Lichfield weekend includes an installation at Spark Lichfield, an exhibition and workshop at Malt, the ‘Best of the Boxes’ exhibition at George IV, and the weekend and festival closes with grown up colouring in at Paradise.

The festival has a talented and eclectic group of artists submitting work and hosting interactive events, with work from Lichfield and Birmingham residents and artists from further afield. The participating artists have come up with ideas such head-sized camera obscuras, a portrait booth and anything that can be imagined in a box.

Art Box’s second festival theme is Upcycling so a lot of the art has been made from existing and discarded materials. This has tied in well with the box theme, with artists combing both themes for their piece.

Further details about the festival can be found at www.artboxfestival.com and the full programme is available online and will be available at participating venues.
