This week at the Robin

The Masters of the Universe, amongst others.

On Monday the Robin plays host to the UK debut tour of American blues singer Dana Fuchs. Known for her parts in the 2007 film Across the Universe and the off-Broadway production Love, Janis, Dana’s first album was released in 2003 while her latest, this year’s Love to Beg, has led to her voice being described as “once in a lifetime greatness”.

Tuesday is the monthly Sam Draisley sessions, featuring the best of local acoustic talent and open mic sessions for anyone who wants to have a go. Admission is free.

Wednesday sees the arrival of veteran space rockers Hawklords. Formed from the remnants of Hawkwind in 1978, the band toured and released an album before mutating back into Hawkwind a year later, presumably because their legal problems had been sorted. They reformed in 2011, with a line-up that featured former members of the band from both incarnations, and have released two studio albums, including last month’s Dream.

There’s a first time at the Robin on Thursday for Martin Barre’s New Day. Martin has spent more than forty years with Jethro Tull, winning a Grammy for Crest of a Knave in 1988 as well as being acclaimed as one of the finest guitarists in the world. He has also worked with Paul McCartney and Phil Collins amongst others and while Tull are taking a lengthy break from touring he has put together a band to play some of their classic material.

Tickets £17.50

On Friday there’s David Bowie tribute Jean Genie.

Angelo Starr brings The Team to the Robin on Saturday.  For many years he played guitar with the band as they backed soul legend Edwin. In 2003 Edwin’s tragic death meant that Angelo, who has also written for and played with many other soul greats, took over to perform the songs which his brother made famous.
