Mums aim to keep buggyfit

Sarah Roberton from Quinton in Birmingham and six fellow mums have found a novel way to prepare for this year’s Bupa Great Birmingham Run .

Sarah, 36, runs several ‘Buggyfit’ classes across Birmingham, including regular classes in green spaces at Bournville, King’s Heath and Cannon Hill Park. The Buggyfit classes offer mums the opportunity to get together and exercise in parks and public spaces across the UK. Sarah has been a trainer for two years and the classes have grown in popularity.

She says; “A number of mums really got into running and, as a result, I decided to extend my Buggyfit classes to runner classes for mums that wanted to improve further. We have been training together by running shuttles whilst one runner stays with the babies, doing squats or lunges while they wait.”

As a Buggyfit trainer, Sarah enjoys inspiring other mums to get fit and is very excited to run the half-marathon on October 20th, now in its third year and which in 2012 attracted some 18,000 participants. She says, “I am very proud to be a positive role model to mums who want to keep fit after having children. Being active is very important as it allows us to get so much more enjoyment from having young children. There is a real art to running a Buggyfit class whilst ensuring the babies are happy and entertained at the same time!”

Sarah, a keen squash player, lives with her husband, David, and three children Michah (9), Trinity (7) and Moses (6). She is raising money for Quinton Youth for Christ, a charitable organisation that aims to enrich and empower young people in the local community. Money raised will go towards a mentoring facility to help keep teenagers off the streets.
