The University of Wolverhampton is to host its first dedicated Open Day for Deaf and hearing-impaired learners this month.
The event will take place at the Wolverhampton City Campus on Wednesday, 27 March 2013 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event, which follows a similar format to the University’s other Open Days, has been designed to support the specific needs of deaf and hearing-impaired learners and to promote the University’s extensive support for the deaf community.
Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with current Deaf students, recent graduates, staff and support staff to find out about University life and the Deaf student experience.
The Open Day has been organised in association with the Deaf Education Advocacy Fellowship (DEAF), a community interest company run by deaf people which promotes education and aspiration-raising.
John Hay was awarded an MBE in 2008 for his services to higher education and to the Deaf community and is the University Ambassador for Deaf Studies. He said: “The University is proud of all of our graduates, in all walks of life, and some of them will be represented at the Open Day to talk to prospective students about the benefits of a higher education.
“Whereas deaf people can sometimes feel isolated, the community within Wolverhampton and the University is highly supportive. This is an excellent place to learn and achieve your potential.”
The deaf learner event will be fully supported by BSL Interpreters and a Note-taking service will be available on the day.
Visitors will also be able to find out more a Scholarship available to new deaf learners who choose to study at Wolverhampton in September 2013.
As part of the National Scholarship Programme, the University is offering Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Leaners a scholarship of up to £3,000 in their first year of study.
